Selangor hampiri gelaran

Hernandez mula tunjuk taring

“Kami benar-benar gembira,” kata Pengurus United Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Anda selalu berasa terlalu yakin. Bila dia melewati, saya menjangkakan dia akan menjaringkan gol. Ia adalah baik untuk menjaringkan gol.” - AP

Skuad bola sepak B-21 negara diberi tiga pilihan

HALA tuju skuad Harimau Muda A akhirnya terjawab.

"Terdapat tiga pilihan.

Tevez gesa Torres sertai City

Barcelona dibebani hutang

Bolton sign Real Madrid youngster

Bolton Wanderers have signed teenage left-back Marcos Alonso from Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old has agreed a three-year deal at the Reebok Stadium and becomes the club's third summer signing following the arrivals of Martin Petrov and Robbie Blake.
Manager Owen Coyle told the club's website: "He is an exciting young player who has undoubted quality and he will bring that into our mix. I think that we have a real talent on our hands.

"I have said before that when we are investing money in transfers that I want to do it with young, talented players. He isn't the finished article yet - he's a young player making his way - but you don't get through at Real Madrid without having a bit about you."

Provide Competition

Alonso progressed through the ranks at the Bernabeu and made his debut for Real against Racing Santander in April.

His granddad played for Real in the late 1950s and early 1960s, while his father turned out for Barcelona in the mid 1980s.

Alonso will provide competition for Paul Robinson and Jlloyd Samuel at left-back this season.

Hodgson confirms Mascherano wants away

Javier Mascherano wants to leave Liverpool, the club's manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed.

Hodgson has been speaking to the Reds' key figures since taking over from Rafael Benitez at Anfield and while captain Steven Gerrard has indicated he wants to stay, Argentina skipper Mascherano is keen to move on, with reports linking him with a reunion with Benitez at Inter Milan.

Hodgson has had more positive news from Spain striker Fernando Torres, who has confirmed his intention to return to the club on Monday and to remain at Anfield.

LOOKING FORWARD

"Yes, he wants to leave the club," confirmed Hodgson when asked about Mascherano.
"He has made that perfectly clear. I think he wanted to leave a year go.
"He wants to leave now but he is contracted to Liverpool so whether he leaves or not will be our decision."
Recent speculation suggested Torres was keen to play Champions League football this season and was considering his options.

Hodgson said that was not the message the club had received from the Spain striker.
"As far as I know he is looking forward to coming back here; he is back on Monday," said the Englishman.
"He is enjoying a holiday - a well-deserved break as he has not had one for three years.
"He is spending a lot of time with his family, keeping a low profile and as far as I know he is not really speaking to anyone.

"But he has told us that he is looking forward to Monday, looking forward to getting back to work and looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season.
"That is what I know so other reports, I would suggest, are erroneous."

.

"Bagaimanapun, kita semua masih belum mendengar sebarang keputusan daripadanya," kata Lawrenson.

Balotelli jadi milik City

Koscielny can't wait to get started

Arsenal new boy Laurent Koscielny is relishing the challenge of playing in the Barclays Premier League.

Koscielny, 24, arrived in what is understood to be a £10m switch from French club Lorient, and has already impressed during his two pre-season run-outs, against Barnet and then Sturm Graz.
The 24-year-old centre-half accepts it will be a significant step up to the hustle and bustle of English top-flight football, but is relishing the battles that lie ahead.

"I feel that I read the game well and one of my strengths is challenging for the ball in the air.

Brazil job will test Menezes' inner calm

When Brazil shine, the players get the credit for their flair and brilliance. When they fall short of expectations, the coach gets the blame.

Being in charge of Brazilian team is like sitting in a coconut shy - plenty of things are thrown in your direction. And the bombardment could be especially fierce in the case of new boss Mano Menezes, who is taking over with everyone knowing that he was not the first choice for the job.

Muricy Ramalho, currently in charge of Fluminense, was the preferred candidate of the CBF - the Brazilian FA - and a man who, after guiding Sao Paulo to three consecutive league titles from 2006-08 he gave an interview in which he described the notion of turning down the Brazil job as "a joke".

And yet, he has done exactly that, leaving the CBF looking stupid and lapping up criticism from the local media.

On Saturday, sports daily Lance! put an editorial on its front page describing the farce with Ramalho as an example of "the amateurism and improvisation of the actions of the CBF and its directors with things of real importance to our football. Attitudes for which we have already paid a high price, with the loss of titles and of chances to organise our domestic football. And which have transformed the organisation of the 2014 World Cup into a blind flight to an uncertain destination".

Mano Menezes and Roberto RivelinoNew Brazil coach Mano Menezes (left) shares a joke with 1970 World Cup star Roberto Rivelino - photo: AP

The problem was that Fluminense would not free Ramalho from his contract. Indeed, it does seem an extraordinary oversight from the CBF not to have checked this before announcing that he was by far the best man to take them forward.

But Ramalho could have walked. A compensation claim could have been negotiated. It would be naïve to expect such loyalty to run both ways. If Fluminense have a run of bad results, they are liable to sack Ramalho without a minute's thought - they have done it to plenty of others.

Ramalho has said that contracts should be honoured, and that he needs to give an example to his children by sticking to his agreement with Fluminense. It sounds like an attempt to claim the moral high ground, but I wonder if his refusal has been chiefly motivated by the pragmatism that has always been the hallmark of his teams. Perhaps he was afraid that whoever takes over now might prove to be a fall guy.

As soon as Dunga was sacked following Brazil's quarter-final exit from the World Cup, CBF president Ricardo Teixeira talked of the need for renewal.

Brazil took an old squad to South Africa and few of them will be around in 2014, so there is a big rebuilding job to be done. The new coach may take charge of the Under-20s and will certainly, assuming Brazil qualify, lead the Under-23s at the London Olympics.
He will also be expected to throw plenty of youngsters straight into the senior side, starting with next month's friendly away to the USA.

The obvious risk is that results might suffer while an inexperienced team finds its feet. That is what happened some 20 years ago when the great midfielder Falcao took charge of Brazil after the 1990 World Cup with a similar rebuilding brief. Before long, he had lost his job.

The shadow of Luiz Felipe Scolari hangs over the new coach. He remains the overwhelming peoples' choice and even former captain Socrates appears to have been seduced by the charisma of a man who sees the world from a very different perspective.

In a recent interview on this website, Socrates pushed Scolari's claims - a fan of Fidel Castro lining up behind an admirer of General Pinochet.

But 'Big Phil' ensured that he was out of the running by agreeing to coach Palmeiras before the World Cup. He doesn't want the Brazil job now, but he would surely love to have it in two years time, in the run up to 2014.

So, Mano Menezes has accepted the challenge and the CBF website has paid tribute to his courage in doing so. A (very) lower division centre-back in his playing days, he coached a number of minor sides before hitting the big time in the last five years with Gremio and Corinthians.

He picked both up after relegation to the Second Division, took them back up and reinstalled them among the giants, leading Gremio to the final of the 2007 Copa Libertadores and winning last year's Brazilian Cup with Corinthians.

Menezes is no out-and-out-romantic - there is little space for such figures in contemporary Brazilian football. Like Scolari and Dunga, he is from the south of Brazil, a region where mass European immigration has left its mark with a preference for a tough style of play. But there are promising signs in his nurturing of all-round midfielders, an area where Brazil badly need a rethink.

Lucas developed well under him at Gremio and Cristian and Elias have caught the eye with Corinthians. He is also a believer in pacy wide attackers, Carlos Eduardo with Gremio, Dentinho and Jorge Henrique with Corinthians. His Brazil are unlikely to be totally dependent on the full-backs for penetration down the flanks.
With his cropped hair and pale skin, Menezes has the appearance of a US marine. But there is clearly more to him than a sergeant-major figure. He is held in affection by his players - as shown at Saturday's press conference when Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and others briefly invaded the show to give their congratulations.
Mano Menezes is known for his cool demeanour, he is unlikely to be seen knocking nine bells out of the dugout, as Dunga did during that quarter final defeat by the Netherlands.

But he takes charge of Brazil at an awkward time and that inner calm will be thoroughly tested over the next few years.

Comments on the piece in the space provided. Questions on South American football to vickerycolumn@hotmail.com and I'll pick out a couple for next week.
From last week's postbag:

Q) Do you thing Peru stand a chance of qualifying for a World Cup again soon?
Krister Wendelborg

It's been a while. They haven't made it since '82, and though they were close in '86 and '98, they've been miles away since, but I'm certainly expecting some improvement in the next campaign. Over the last couple of years there have been some promising signs from Peruvian clubs in the Libertadores.
I'm also a big fan of Sergio Markarian, the Uruguayan who has just been brought in to coach the national team - a very serious figure. But this next set of qualifiers will be extremely competitive, and I wonder if there's enough genuine quality available to pick up points away from home.
Q) As a Benfica fan I would like to know your opinion on our new signing Nicolas Gaitan from Argentina. He is replacing fellow Argentinean Angel di Maria who is going to Real Madrid. Do you think Gaitan has the qualities to be a major player in the Liga Portugal and the Champions League?
Marco Sody

A) Although Gaitan is also left footed, they are very different players. Di Maria is a flyer. Gaitan came through the ranks more as an artistic foot-on-the-ball midfielder, though Boca were also using him wide right, curling in crosses for the centre forward. Di Maria's gifts make him more naturally suited to the European game. I hope Gaitan comes off, but I'll be surprised if he makes the same impact as Di Maria.

"We are building a squad here at the DW and I see James as being another real quality addition who will add great competition in the midfield areas.
"He is young, hungry, desperate to play for us in the Premier League and I believe he has all the attributes you need to be a success at this level."

Spurs start with win

Tottenham Hotspur beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in the first match of the Barclays New York Challenge.

Spurs came from behind at Red Bull Arena after Thierry Henry had scored for the Americans on his debut.
The former Arsenal striker was a regular scourge of Tottenham defences during eight successful years in north London and needed just 25 minutes to make his mark in the Barclays New York Challenge match.

Joel Lindpere created the opening for the new arrival with a teasing low cross from the left channel and Henry reacted smartly to steer the ball beyond Carlo Cudicini.

The Frenchman was removed at the interval and with it went the home side's impetus as Harry Redknapp's Spurs got a foothold in the match.

The equaliser arrived on 62 minutes as New York failed to clear their lines from a corner and Robbie Keane had a simple task to tap home at the far post.
And 10 minutes later the fightback was complete as Gareth Bale latched onto a weak defensive header to slot the ball home.
good team
"I wasn't surprised (by Red Bulls), I knew it would be difficult and I thought they had some good players," Redknapp told Spurs' official website.

"The boy up front the, number 10 (Macoumba Kandji), was a very skillful player, he is from Senegal I think, he has got good ability.

"They have Thierry Henry up there as well now and the American kids at the back were quick, they were a good team.

"They are fit and they were bright. It was difficult but we stuck in there and got the result.
"We went to San Jose and I was impressed with them as well.

"They played well so certainly the league here looks in good shape. I've been really impressed with the two teams I have seen."

Hodgson wants young talent

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is looking to bring in more young players with "exceptional talent".

While the focus, naturally, has been on assessing the strengths of the first team, bringing in players of the quality of Joe Cole and working to secure the commitment of senior players, Hodgson is well aware he has to have one eye on the future.

New boy Danny Wilson fits into the latter category, with the 18-year-old having signed a three-year contract after Liverpool agreed a deal which could be worth up to £5m with Rangers.

Delayed Holidays

Hodgson has been working with a mainly reserve side at the club's Switzerland training camp because of delayed holidays for those players involved at the World Cup and so has seen first hand Liverpool's potential up-and-coming stars.

His first match in charge on Wednesday night saw a team with only three first-team regulars - Lucas Leiva, Alberto Aquilani and David Ngog - draw 0-0 with Grasshoppers.

"In tandem with what we're doing with the first team, we've got to have our eyes and ears alert to any young talent that could be future stars," said the Reds manager.

"The earlier we get them into the club the better. Against Grasshoppers we saw young players like Nathan Eccleston and David Amoo, young players who showed they've got exceptional talent.

"We need more players of that type of quality. Danny Wilson is certainly one and I'm very pleased we've brought him into the club."

Friendly round-up - Thurs 22nd July

A review of Thursday's pre-season friendly action involving Barclays Premier League sides.

Zoltan Gera scored twice but it was not enough as Fulham were held to a 2-2 draw by Swedish side Halmstad.

A strong Fulham side included eight of the 11 who started the Europa League final, and things started well when Gera headed home Simon Davies' cross in the eighth minute.

But at the other end, goalkeeper David Stockdale could not handle a shot from Emil Salomonsson, and Joe Sise easily equalised in the 24th minute.

Moments later Sise struck again with a good finish to beat Stockdale and put the hosts ahead.
Fulham levelled just before the hour mark when Damien Duff teed up Gera who fired home from 20 yards.
good save

Blackpool beat Kilmarnock 5-4 on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the Joma South West Challenge Cup after the match ended 2-2.

The Tangerines twice led through Jason Euell and youngster Lewis Almond but the Scottish club pulled it back before going out on spot kicks.

Stoke City were held to a goalless draw by League One newcomers Notts County at Meadow Lane.
James Beattie was one of the more impressive performers for the Potters in Nottingham, drawing a good save from the Magpies goalkeeper in the second half.
Meanwhile, a largely youthful Stoke line-up won 2-1 at non-league side Nantwich.

Eighteen-year-old striker Louis Moult scored both goals for the Potters in the first half, slotting in his first from 15 yards and scoring with a delicate finish from close range from a Ben Marshall cross for the second.
The match ended on a high for Nantwich at the Weaver Stadium as Jake Sedgemore curled in a 35-yard free-kick.

Premier League signs up EA Sports as technology partner

Gaming giant EA Sports, known for its 'Fifa Soccer' football game franchise, has signed up as the Premier League's first sports technology partner.

The sums involved in the deal have not been revealed, but gives EA Sports a number of rights.
Its on-screen branding will be shown during all live Premier League football broadcasts, including coverage on Sky, ESPN and all overseas broadcasts.

The EA branding will be linked to match statistics when they appear on screen.
EA will also sponsor the Premier League's player performance index, replacing Actim as the league's player rating system.

In addition the US gaming giant will publish a Team of the Week on the Premier League's website.
'Thirst for stats'

Meanwhile, the league is working with video analysts Venatrack to have new software in place for the start of the season, which should increase the amount of data and information available to fans.

The league hopes this information may then be used to provide an enhanced player performance index.
Richard Masters, director of sales and marketing at the Premier League, said the developments would help sate fans' increased "thirst for statistics and information".

Meanwhile EA Sports said the deal would help it further establish itself as the leading football gaming experience.

China talks of bid for World Cup in 2026

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The four Asian countries bidding to host the 2022 World Cup already have enough to be concerned about with demands for stadiums, hotels and transport networks and strong contenders from other confederations. Now, they have to worry about China.

China's Football Association has signaled it may bid for the World Cup in 2026, raising speculation that such a move could undermine the hopes of Japan, South Korea, Qatar and even Australia which are in the running to host the 2022 tournament.

The winning bids for 2018 and 2022 will be announced Dec. 2, with a European country expected to be chosen for the earlier of those. The emergence of China as a contender for 2026 could work in favor of the U.S. bid for 2022.

"If China throws its hat in for 2026, it blows everything wide open for 2022 because in many ways China is arguably the last great footballing frontier," said Simon Chadwick, a sports marketing expert at Coventry University in England.
"From the Chinese government's perspective, bidding for the World Cup is an important thing," he said. "From FIFA's perspective, there is considerable appeal in China bidding for 2026 because I think it's a very important marketplace. I would argue China is much more important marketplace than the (U.S.) was in 1994."
CFA head Wei Di first hinted at a bid last week after returning from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, telling the country's leading sports newspaper Titan Sports that China has the venues and the rail network needed to host a big event something he communicated to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
"Mr. Blatter told me China is becoming more and more influential and it's an irresistible trend that China will finally host a World Cup," Wei said.

He also came out in favor of the United States winning the 2022 bid and took aim at Qatar, over fears that an Asian winner would jeopardize China's chances in 2026.

FIFA rules dictate that no continent can host the World Cup twice in a row.
"Qatar is so hot. Even though the country is rich enough to build venues with air conditioning system. But what's the population of that country? How can they fill their venues with people?" Wei told the newspaper.
Strict protocol prohibits candidates from discussing rival World Cup bids ahead of the vote in December for the 2018 and 2022 editions, but the contest for countries wanting to host the 2026 World Cup isn't even open yet, so China isn't bound by those guidelines.
FIFA said in a statement Friday that it does not yet have a tentative timeline with regard to the bidding process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding that it would be premature to speculate on the process at this stage.

"I'd rather hope U.S could win the bid, which means we'll have higher chance of success bidding for 2026," Wei was quoted as saying. "If FIFA decided to let an Asian country host the 2022 World Cup, then China will have to wait at least until 2030."

Wei this week reaffirmed China's interest in hosting the 2026 tournament during a press conference in Beijing but said, according to the Asian Football Confederation website, "I never said I don't want other Asian countries not to win it in 2022."

The talk of China bidding for 2026 World Cup brought a less than supportive response from AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam, a native Qatari who was at the news conference.
Bin Hammam said the AFC is supporting the four Asian bidders for the 2022 tournament and that he "didn't want to jeopardize their chances."

Reaction from the four bidders to the Chinese threat has been mostly mixed, with only Japan acknowledging that a Chinese bid poses challenges. Qatar and Australian football officials declined to comment
.
"I think any country has to take it seriously when a country with so huge a population and such strong economic growth puts itself forward as a candidate," Motoaki Inukai, chairman of Japan's bid and president of the Japan Football Association, said of a China bid. "For FIFA, China is definitely important when it comes to the development of football."

But South Korean officials dismissed a threat posed by China and said its intentions will not influence FIFA delegates when they choose the 2022 World Cup host.

"Since the Chinese haven't even formally registered a bid yet, I don't think the fact that they've shown interest in hosting the World Cup in 2026 will weaken our chances," said Han Sung-joo, chairman of South Korea's World Cup bidding committee.

If China does manage to win the 2026 bid, it would hail a starling turnaround for a nation that has languished in Asian football despite its massive population and interest in the sport. In its favor was China's successful staging of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which highlighted the country's ability to host a major event.
Its domestic league has been marred by corruption and the national squad was knocked out of 2010 World Cup qualifying last year, failing to make the top 10 sides in Asia. In its only World Cup appearance, when the finals were co-hosted by South Korea and Japan in 2002, China lost all three group games and failed to score a goal.
Although football remains hugely popular in China, many fans have given up on the local teams and instead closely follow the professional leagues in England, Spain, Germany and Italy.
But there are signs that China is attempting to improve its footballing image to reflect is growing economic might and the passion for the sport that has been undaunted despite its recent troubles.

Newly appointed national team coach Gao Hongbo has set qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as a target in his quest to revitalize the beleaguered team. And Wei has vowed to clean up the local league and improve the performance of the national side by scheduling more matches and improving training techniques.

"In China, there is already a strong predisposition toward football," Chadwick said. "It's a captive audience and nobody has engaged that captive audience. I think 2026 is the opportunity for FIFA to engage that captive audience."

Iraq's battle for football control turns sectarian

BAGHDAD — Iraq is again dangerously close to being banned from international football for alleged government meddling in the leadership of Iraqi Football Association after armed men stormed into the headquarters last week waving arrest warrants.
The battle over who will lead Iraq's most popular sport after an election set for Saturday has become a window into Iraq's sectarian politics that has officials struggling to form a new government more than four months after inconclusive March elections.
The political bickering between the current Shiite prime minister and his Sunni-backed rival over who will lead the government has spilled over into Iraq's football with the government backing Shiite candidate Falah Hassan against the Sunni incumbent Hussein Saeed.
The Shiite-dominated government has long wanted to purge Iraq's sports association of any officials with alleged ties to the deposed regime of Saddam Hussein.
FIFA's official rules say national football bodies must be independent, and as recently as last month it threatened to suspend France after President Nicolas Sarkozy made noises about reforming its own federation.
In the past two years, FIFA has suspended Iraq twice from international competition because of political interference. On Wednesday, football's governing body warned that any governmental meddling in the association's electoral process is "subject to statutory measures which can include a suspension."
The warning came after men in military-style uniforms on Sunday raided the federation's offices carrying arrest warrants for several of its officials, including Saeed, who lives in Jordan.
The government has stepped up the pressure to oust the 52-year-old Saeed from the presidency alleging the former striker for Baghdad's al-Talaba club, who's ranked 10th on FIFA's list of players with most international matches played, has ties to former regime and is suspected of corruption.
Falah Hassan, a 60-year-old Shiite from Baghdad's slum of Sadr City and a former captain of Iraq's best team al-Zawra, is Saeed's main rival for football's top job in Iraq.
Although Falah's international career pales in comparisons with Saeed's, who comes from Baghdad's fallen Sunni elite, Falah makes a much more appealing candidate in Iraq's current political climate.
On Saturday, the two men will go head to head in the northern city of Irbil for the leadership of the federation.
Even the location of the election, chosen by FIFA, is controversial, however, with the government wanting it to be held in Baghdad, which it is trying to showcase as stable once more.
FIFA, however, deemed the capital too unsafe to send international observers and insisted it take place in the Kurdish autonomous region, which has largely been free of violence since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
Tired of politics and conflict, Iraqis just want football to remain a game.
"It makes no difference where the election occurs and who is the president of the federation," said Hassan Abdul Wahab, a 22-year-old student who plays football every evening on a makeshift field along the Tigris. "The important thing is not to be banned by FIFA and have a chance to play outside Iraq."
While the national team enjoyed a memorable Asia Cup tournament in 2007, defeating Australia and South Korea and Saudi Arabia in the finals, the team has since struggled to beat even the weakest teams in the Middle East.
Earlier this month, Iraq's national team signed Wolfgang Sidka, as a new coach to give it a much needed lift to defend the title early next year.
In May 2008, Iraq was suspended for several days after its government disbanded all national sports bodies, but the ban was lifted when the government assured FIFA that football was excluded from the decision.
Then in November FIFA banned Iraq from international competition after Iraq's Olympic Committee dissolved the football association because of alleged financial and administrative irregularities and the repeated delaying of internal elections. The ban was only lifted in March.
